A Somerset wedding

WEDNESDAY, 29 AUGUST, 2012
On Saturday, 25th August, months of planning came to fruition, with the wedding of my friends, Catherine & Adam Turner. Their wedding was held at the glorious Gants Millin Bruton, Somerset – a beautiful venue on a family farm in the countryside.
We created the dessert menu, which comprised three flavours of brownies, a chilled Indian rice pudding, Lemon Polenta Cake wedges topped with some succulent strawberries, and our own original concept, exclusive to the wedding: Thai Rolls in rice-paper wrappers, with a filling of coconut sticky rice, toasted sesame seeds, and a fresh mango-passion fruit custard. All our dessert options were gluten-free, so that the bride could dive right in and have whatever she wanted and really indulge herself.
The wedding guests loved the choices on offer, a fact made all the sweeter because the happy couple are friends of mine. All in all, a really fantastic day!

September 20th, 2012COMPETITION! ‘My Fantasy Brunch Date’
Hello, lovely readers. Here at Mamapie, we’re starting to feel the Autumn chill. Time for hot baths, home-made soup, country walks, and some seasonal cooking….and a competition!
Up for grabs is a copy of ‘Vegan Brunch’, by the fabulous Isa Chandra Moskowitz of the Post Punk Kitchen. Isa has written a number of books on vegan cookery and baking – her recipes are absolutely cracking.
‘Vegan Brunch’ features recipes for 75 scrumptious dishes such as Swiss Chard Frittata, Rosemary Tomato Scones, Blueberry Ginger Spelt Muffins, and Pain au Chocolat with Fresh Fruit. There are gluten-free dishes, too. This would be a great addition to your stash of cookbooks, whether you’re vegan, vegetarian, or just a lover of really fresh and tasty food.
You could even enter the competition on behalf of the person you’re inviting on your fantasy date, and have the prize sent to them if you win!
Our competition runs until 23:59 on Monday, 2nd December, 2012, so you have plenty of time to concoct your entry! Read on to find out the deal.

A Mamapie update.
January 19th, 2012Well, well, well. We begin 2012 here at Mamapie with a booking from our friends Catherine and Adam, for a dessert table at their summery August wedding. It’s all taking place at the beautiful Gants Mill in Bruton, Somerset. Brownies and cheesecake are part of the plan so far, and we look forward to dreaming up lots of ideas for other yummy delights to add to the menu. How lovely! It’s great to be thinking of luscious Summer berries already.
Christmas was a time for the (now traditional!) Mamapie Chocolate Brownie Factory. Each year, we get super-busy taking orders for our boxes of assorted brownies, which we then send out, on our customers’ behalf, to their friends and relatives all over the country. If you’d like us to send a box to someone, please just get in touch at mamapiecake@yahoo.co.uk and we will be happy to help. Valentine’s Day will soon be upon us, so how about getting your beloved’s gift sorted nice and early? Leave it in our hands, and we will send some gorgeous treats to them in time for the special day!

Menu for this weekend. Celebrity cake-spotting ahoy!
September 14th, 2011Hello, cake-lovers! Here, without further ado, is a run-down of the beautiful cakes that will be filling my counter at Mamapie’s Bake Shop this weekend. And celebrity cake-spotting? Read on to find out who will be making an appearance on Friday and Saturday!
Vegan Banana Cake, served in generous squares.
Vegan Chocolate Fudge Cake – the return of this double-decker chocolatey delight! Smothered in chocolate fudge sauce.
Vegan Cinnamon-Apple Cake – with a crunchy brown-sugar topping.
Brownies aplenty. Dark Cocoa, Orange, Walnut-Mocha and Gluten-free Cocoa Brownies.
Almond Frangipane Cake, with fresh fruit compote baked into the centre, and topped with toasted almond flakes.
Vanila Swirl Cupcakes, with pretty icing and colourful sprinkles. Come and choose a few different colours to take home – boxes of 4 are available.
Shrewsbury Biscuits – I am told that this local speciality is not to be found in the shops here – c-r-a-z-y! Let’s do something about that.
And a celebrity appearance is also scheduled. Please meet……….Nutella Lawson! Chocolate cupcakes with Nutella icing.
You’re in for a gorgeous treat! And remember that you can take your cakes to a table at Mirage Mezze to accompany your meal, or just to have with a hot or cold drink.

Vegan banana cupcakes.
Vegan banana pudding cupcakes: vegan banana cake, filled with raspberry conserve and vegan vanilla custard, topped with more banana cake, custard and jam, and then sprinkled with toasted coconut.
Courgette Cake, with passion-fruit cream-cheese icing.
Seeded cranberry cookies.
Pear Frangipane Cake: a rich, buttery loaf cake with almonds and a baked-in pear filling, finished with a crunchy brown sugar topping.
Vegan Cinnamon Pumpkin Bread: slabs of semi-sweet gingerbread – packed full of butternut squash and spices.
Dark Cocoa Brownies.
Gluten-free Cocoa Brownies. So fudgy and moist! No more dry GF cakes here!
Pecan Brownies.
Mocha-Almond Brownies.
Chocolate-Orange Brownies.

Shrewsbury Folk Festival weekend!

GOOD NEWS FOR CAKE-LOVERS! MAMAPIE’S BAKE SHOP is the place to get your cakes in the Market Hall, Shrewsbury. I bake beautiful and delicious cakes, brownies and cupcakes, and my counter is always full of all manner of lovely things. (There’s lots of choice for vegans and those avoiding dairy and eggs, too. Hooray!)

Citrus Kick Cupcakes: my zesty lemon-and-lime cakes with a swirl of fresh lemon icing.

Marbled Almond & Wild Damson Cake: take away a slab of my buttery almond cake, with lashings of home-made hedgerow damson compote, and topped with toasted almonds.

Mamapie’s Bake Shop is now open for business!
August 25th, 2011Well! I am most thrilled to announce that Mamapie’s Bake Shop opened on August 2nd, and is now firmly established as the place for delicious cupcakes, cakes and brownies in Shrewsbury’s Market Hall. I’ve been baking all sorts of gorgeous delights over the past 3 weeks, and the response has been great so far. Customers are coming back for more, and it all feels very positive. With the Summer holidays almost over, the Bake Shop is looking forward to more and more people coming to get some delicious cakes. Autumn is going to be a very interesting time chez Mamapie.
So……here are some pictures of some of the beautiful baking that has graced my counter so far.

Mamapie’s Bake Shop to open on August 2nd!

Mamapie is pleased to announce that our new Bake Shop will open for business on Tuesday, 2nd August in the Market Hall, Shrewsbury. We bake beautiful and delicious cakes, brownies and cupcakes to tempt and delight you.
Our opening menu will be:

Peachy Pecan Pie cupcakes – bursting with chunks of juicy peaches, a cinnamon swirl, and munchy pecan nuts.
Black Forest – decadent dark chocolate cakes, filled with fluffy vanilla buttercream and a tart red-cherry sauce, piled high with more cake and cream, and topped with a cherry and chocolate shavings.
Sweet Almondy – tender almond cakes, filled with apricot preserves and topped with an apricot glaze and flaked almonds.
Va-Va-Vanilla – delicious vanilla cakes, topped with a generous swirl of buttercream and pretty sprinkles.
